जौनपुर से कुछ पुलिसवाले एक बदमाश को पकड़ने वाराणसी पहुंचे थे लेकिन ग्रामीणों ने उन्हें बंधक बनाकर पेड़ से बांध दिया और फिर उनकी बुरी तरह पिटाई कर दी. इस दौरान जमकर पथराव भी हुआ जिसमें एक थाना इंचार्ज समेत कई पुलिसवाले घायल भी हो गए. जवाबी कार्रवाई करते हुए पुलिस ने भी दर्जनों ग्रामीणों को हिरासत में ले लिया.
